What is BNYS?

BNYS (Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences) is an undergraduate program in Indian alternative medicine, which covers the study of both Naturopathy medicine and Therapeutic Yoga. Naturopathy is a system of treatment which recognizes the existence of the vital curative force within the body. It is a drug-less non-invasive rational and evidence based system of medicine imparting treatments with natural elements based on the theory of vitality, theory of toxemia, theory of self healing capacity of the body and the principles of healthy living. It helps human system to remove the cause of disease by expelling the unwanted and unused matters from human body. Yoga is an ancient art, which combines physical exercise, mental (meditation), and breathing techniques for harmonizing the system of development for body, mind and spirit.



With the Indian government’s focus on encouraging yoga through formation of a separate ministry [AYUSH] as well as organizing an exclusive. International Yoga Day on 21 June to stress on the rich cultural heritage that the nation is blessed with, a career in naturopathy is likely to be both fulfilling as well as lucrative.



Naturopathy revolves around the body’s own healing capability and hence encourages healing and self-cleansing. This mechanism lays stress on increasing immunity as well as detoxification of body. Hence, a person having done Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (BNYS) will focus on working closely with patient’s symptoms as well as reactions in order to ensure that the treatment provide is in most cases personalized. Things like emotional predispositions, biomechanics as well as biochemistry of the patients are utilized for treating illness.

Students who aspire to become a Doctor, but are not able to secure a MBBS seat would generally prefer BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS, BVSc & AH, or BNYS. The duration of BNYS course in India is 5.5 years with 4.5 years of classroom study and 1 year compulsory internship. BNYS Medical graduates are equivalent to MBBS medical graduates as a general physician. On completion of the program, students are eligible to prefix “Dr.” before their name and to be called as a Doctor.

BNYS course is governed by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), which is the statutory apex body working under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Department of AYUSH.

Bachelor of Naturopathy & Yogic Science (BNYS): Eligibility

Candidates aspiring for admission to the course are required to fulfill the following minimum eligibility criteria.

  • 10+2 education completed in the Science stream, from a recognized educational Board.
  • Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Biology as the main subjects at the 10+2 level.
  • A minimum aggregate score of 45% (40% for SC/ST/OBC candidates) at the 10+2 level.

For those keen to apply for the course and not having completed 10+2 in the Science stream, another option is to obtain a 1-year certificate from The National Institute of Naturopathy, Pune.

This institution offers a year-long program, namely ‘Treatment Attendant Training Course’. The eligibility to apply for this certification program is a class X qualification.
