St. Joseph's College (Autonomous), Bangalore is one of the oldest colleges in the state of Karnataka with a history of more than 136 years. It has been conferred as College of Excellence by the University Grants Commission (India). The college is awarded a rating of A++ (3.79/4), in the 4th cycle of re-accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2017. It imparts graduate, post-graduate and research education.

History:

St. Joseph's was set up in the year 1882 because of the salubrious climate and strategic position of Bangalore, and the need to provide education for the small Catholic community comprising about 1000 Europeans and 5000 Indians. In 1904 the Indian section was separated from the European section.

In 1926 the University of Madras granted the Institution the status of a First Grade College. On 1 June 1937, the management of the College was transferred to the Society of Jesus. From 1882 to 1937 the college was under the French foreign missionaries. At the time the college consisted of one building, constructed in 1925, accommodating 350 students. In 1967 the College was granted permanent affiliation to Bangalore University. 1972 saw the commerce sections and evening college separated from the main college. It was the first affiliated college in Karnataka to offer postgraduate courses in Botany and Chemistry and set up a research centre. The college is one of the early ones to go for NAAC accreditation in 1998 and got a four-star (70–75%).In 2001 the College moved from the Residency Road campus to new premises in the erstwhile Hostel Campus at the intersection of Langford Road and Lalbagh Road. The pre-university section was separated from the college in 2002 as part of the Karnataka state policy of bifurcation. It was Accredited by UGC as a College with Potential for Excellence‘ (CPE) on 3 November 2004 and was one of five colleges in Karnataka that was awarded academic autonomy in the year 2005. The second cycle of NAAC Accreditation conferred A‘ level (Score 85.3%) on 2 February 2006. A commemorative stamp by India Post was released on 1 August 2009. The UGC extended the College's Autonomous Status for the period 2010–2011 to 2015–2016. Yet again the college saw an improvement in its NAAC Accreditation score in the third Cycle with 'A' level and a score of 3.73/4 on 10 March 2012. The college was granted College for Excellence‘(CE) status by the UGC in 2014. It was granted the status of DST-FIST College. The UGC once again extended the Autonomous Status for the period 2016–2022.

In 2014 the College was cited for its model library facility.

The institution has four main buildings, located in the centre of the Cantonment.

Pre-University College located in the vicinity of St. Patrick's Church and Good Shepherd Convent.

St Joseph's Evening College, Bangalore was established in 1972 as a Jesuit college to empower the underprivileged sectors of Indian society. In 2005, it was given autonomous status by the UGC, to devise its own curriculum. The Evening College is a minority institution and accepts students of all religious denominations without discrimination. It is affiliated to Bangalore University and offers three-year BCom, BA, BCA, and BBM degrees and two-year postgraduate degrees in Commerce (M.Com), Management (MBA Twinning Programme), and English.

In 2007 Joseph's won the top prize at Agno-Fest competition among 13 colleges, in commerce, science, and arts competitions. In 2014 a post-graduate course in commerce (MCom) introduced.

The college also organizes seminars for the public; a seminar on climate change in 2011 attracted more than 400 persons. Furthermore, it fields sports teams, including a successful boys' hockey team.

Infrastructure - Overview:

St. Josephs College is located in the heart of the city and provides the best infrastructural facilities which to a large number of students for various courses. The College has ICT enabled classrooms, facilities for sports and games, auditoriums, an observatory, along with recreational and hygiene spaces. The College also has two libraries; one in the Post Graduate section and the other in the Unger Graduate campus.

Two full-fledged canteens and a kiosk cater to the differing taste of students and staff in the campus.

A dedicated examination wing spread over two floors with ample working space for teaching staff and dedicated counters for students has been set up in the UG campus of the institution.

State of the art laboratories is maintained for all disciplines in both the UG and the PG campuses. For the Journalism course, a language lab has been made available for the use of the students. High-end equipment and studios with the latest technology and best in class editing suites for both video editing and sound design are provided for students from the visual communications stream.

The classrooms are all furnished with comfortable seating arrangements. The classrooms also have ample natural light along with good air circulation. All the classrooms in the campus have ICT facility.

The entire campus, both UG and PG are WiFi enabled, which can be freely accessed by both students and members of the staff.

The college is sensitive to the needs of differently abled students/staff and provides facilities to meet their requirements. The college has ramps, railings along stairs, elevators, and wheelchairs to provide access to all areas of the campus. The college has provided a separate washroom for the differently abled staff and students. The college has three wheelchairs in each block, one washroom, and three ramps. Lifts are available in all three blocks. College provides the visually challenged students with Readers; availability of devices such as computers with screen reading software, low-vision aids, scanners, mobility devices, etc.
The college has separate hostel facilities for men and women students. The college has two men‘s hostels, one within the campus and another hostel located 6 KM away from campus.

The auditorium complex is a dedicated state of the art space in the UG campus. There are ATM’s from two banks attached to the PG block for the use of students.

Management scholarships: Available for economically poor students and they are eligible to apply only in the 2nd/3year in college. Notification regarding the application process will be notified on the college notice board.

Mentorship:

St. Josephs College has a unique continuous mentoring program for students during their academic life in the institution. The endeavours of each student are guided by a mentor assigned by the college. The responsibilities of mentors often go beyond academic activities and encourage students on various aspects of his or her life.

Each class is assigned a mentor who shall be available and accessible for one on one interaction with the students. The mentor also monitors attendance in individual subjects, tracks the development of academic work, and motivates the students on a constant basis. The mentor will also, based on the assessment of the student, provide counseling and advice.

If you are wondering if you can skip class and attend only the exam then this is not the college you are looking for. Attendance is strict 75% is a must for each subject,if you fail them they don't mind blocking your hall ticket.

If you are culture and art lover then you would be amazed by the variety of fest and exhibition that happens throughout the year. Northeast fest is one of the best, where you get to see the richness of states in Northeast India.

When it comes to departmental fest META conducted by English department is amazing you get to be part of various events and discussion. Quiz conducted by Arul Mani is out of league. Discussion with various writers and panelists are very interesting and knowledgeable.
