B.V.Sc. and AH: What is it About?

Veterinary Science is a branch of science that concerns with diagnosis, treatment and curing of diseases in birds and animals. The subject involves the study of animal physiology and various treatment and prevention schemes undertaken to block diseases among animals. The basic principles of veterinary science and animal husbandry are similar as human medical sciences. The difference is in the variation of jobs; a veterinary doctor has many responsibilities than that of a general physician or a human surgeon. Students while studying B.V.Sc. Veterinary Science and A. H. not only take care of animal health but also facilitate scientific breeding and handling of livestock.

Vets give treatment to the animals for their healthy living. Major part of their work also involves performing surgery in cases where internal parts of animals and birds are injured. This could be due to diseases or victim of hunt. Vets prevent further spreading of diseases in the animal’s body by administering necessary vaccination and medicines. They give advice to pet owners on how to take good care and provide good nourishment to their pets and farm animals.

Another section of this course is to improve animal breed by using techniques like 'selection breeding' and artificial insemination. The course study thoroughly does animal research in order to combat and fight diseases transmitted through animals. In this way, the general public is saved from exposure to diseases mobilized by animals, wildlife, poultry and livestock. The role of a veterinary doctor is important as he works to conserve the bounty of livestock and domestic animal wealth.

BVSc or Bachelor of Veterinary Science is an undergraduate degree that comes under medical discipline. The course duration is 5½ years with last 6 months being compulsory internship tenure. BVSc is also called BVSc and AH which is elaborated as Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry. Bachelor of Veterinary Science deals with the study of medical diagnostics, and treatment of diseases of all the animals. Veterinary doctors are very important considering the number of animals that humans pet. Veterinary doctors treat all kinds of pet animals such as dogs, cats, cows, buffalos, as well as wild animals, birds and reptiles.

BVSc course is divided into 10 semesters equally excluding the compulsory internship time. BVSc and AH course graduates have a high probability of getting government jobs. They can also start their own veterinary clinics or work in research centres to develop new medicines.

A bachelor of Veterinary Science can get employment in various government animal husbandry departments, poultry farms, dairy farms, Wildlife sanctuaries and zoological parks, private and government veterinary hospitals and clinics.

BVSc Entrance Exams:

There are many exams that are conducted by different colleges and state education boards for BVSc and AH course. Some of the entrance exams are as mentioned below:

RPVT:

Rajasthan University of Veterinary Sciences conducts Rajasthan Pre Veterinary Test every year in the month of June for veterinary science aspirants. The minimum eligibility to write the exam is to score a minimum of 50 percent in their board exams.

KEAM:

Kerala Engineering Architecture Medical Entrance Examination is conducted by Government of Kerala for admissions into different colleges in the state. Veterinary science aspirants who wish to do their bachelor's degree in Kerala have to write this exam.

KCET:

Karnataka education board conducts the Karnataka Common Entrance Test for students who choose to join Veterinary science colleges in Karnataka.

WBJEE:

West Bengal education board conducts West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination. Students who are willing to join veterinary science colleges in West Bengal have to clear this exam.

BVSc Course Eligibility:

The basic eligibility for this course is 10+2 with subjects Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and with a minimum of 50% in aggregate from CBSE/ICSE/State Board or equivalent. Eligibility to most veterinary colleges is on the basis of results obtained in the entrance examinations conducted by the respective universities. Veterinary Council of India conducts an All India Pre Veterinary Test (AIPVT) for admission to the first year of Bachelor of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry (BVSc and AH) course.

In case of candidates belonging to the SC/ST or other special categories, eligible marks are less than what is prescribed for general category. Some students who have got a degree in zoology are also eligible to join veterinary colleges as a lateral entry student.

BVSc Admission Procedure

Admission to undergraduate programme leading to Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc.& A.H.) degree is done through merit list of NEET(National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test) conducted by NTA-National Testing Agency for XII class Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English (attaining 50% marks in these subjects overall) stream students.

But Academic year 2019 some states conduct their own entrance exam, like Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal -Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar-Pradesh, West-Bengal, Orissa, etc.

NRI-Seats/NRI-Category

Candidates for admission to BVSc & AH Course under NRI category should read the rules carefully for admission before submitting the application form.
