What is BAMS?

Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (B.A.M.S.) is a professional degree in medicine focused on Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a branch of alternative medicine. The term ‘Ayurveda’ stands for Science of life and offered in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and other South Asian countries.

It is awarded after the study of five and a half years duration, including 1-year internship. A BAMS graduate is allowed to provide medical treatment in some states of India and Sri Lanka after registering oneself at the government-approved licensing body.

Ayurveda is considered to be pseudoscientific by the mainstream scientific community and is a type of complementary or alternative medicine. It is an integrated degree in the medical field, and is specially designed to teach students the systems of the traditional Indian system of Ayurveda.

As per Ayurveda, the human body has three kinds of dysfunctions or disorders – Kapha meaning Phlegm (water and earth), Pitta meaning Bile (fire & water) and Vata meaning Wind (Air and space).These dysfunctions or disorders are commonly called as the ‘Doshas’ in Ayurvedic terminology.

Among total seats, out of which few seats is reserved for Central Govt. nomination, few for foreign nationals sponsored by ICCR, few for South-East Asian Countries, few Seats for Girls and reservation for SC, ST, OBC and PH as per Government of India norms.

Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery - B.A.M.S. (ayurvedacharya)

1 Aims & Objectives: The course aims at providing basic education in Ayurveda leading to the degree of B.A.M.S. It aims at preparing graduates of profound scholarship in the science of Ayurveda having basic and fundamental knowledge in different subjects of Ayurveda backed up by extensive practical training. He should become an efficient teacher, a research scholar and a competent Ayurvedic physician (Kayachikitsaka) and surgeon (Shalyachikitsaka) to be able to contribute his mite in the medical and health services of the Country.
2 Duration: 5½ years ( Including one year internship)
3 Eligibility (a) Must have passed higher secondary school certificate examination after 12 years of schooling with physics, chemistry and biology subjects. Knowledge of Sanskrit is essential for the admission. (b) Any other equivalent course recognized by the Government and State education Board. (c) From 2018 onwards, all aspirants for BAMS need to clear the NEET examination.
4 Qualifying age: Must have completed 17 years as on 31st December of year of admission to the main course.
5 Medium of Instruction: English

BAMS Course:

Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery (BAMS) is a graduate degree course in Ayurvedic system. This degree is awarded after the completion of 5 years and 6 month degree programme containing the 4 and 1/2 year academic session and one year internship programme with live practical.

The UG degree course is separated in three sections of 1.5 years each. These sections called as the three professional courses. In first professional course the students are taught about the anatomy, physiology and history of Ayurvedic system. In second course they are taught about the toxicology and pharmacology and the final course contains the surgery, ENT, skin, obstetrics and gynaecology. The entire course contains the modern anatomy, principles of medicines, physiology, social and preventive medicines, forensic medicine, principle of surgery, toxicology, ENT, botany and pharmacology. The graduates use the title “Vaidyar” before their name (abbreviation is Vr.)

BAMS Vs MBBS

BAMS may not be considered as sought-after as an MBBS course, but there are many details that make it worth pursuing. Getting into BAMS course is not that difficult when compared with MBBS. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course is relatively tough and has limited number of seat in proportion to the number of candidates that apply for admission. It is relatively easy to get in a seat in Government College to pursue BAMS course and it is cheaper than MBBS. In BAMS course, candidates are required to study modern medical sciences and modern diagnostics along with Ayurvedic Samhitas. Whereas in MBBS candidates do not wander off from the domain of advanced medicine and new technology associated with it.

After completing BAMS, candidates can go for clinical research or can take up a course of alternative medicine just like a MBBS graduate. BAMS graduate also have the option of pursuing MD and MS in Ayurveda but do not have as many option as an MBBS graduate has. After BAMS one can go for an MD or MS in Ayurveda after completing your BAMS. BAMS graduates can also pursue higher studies in many medical-related disciplines. A few options include Master’s in Public Health, Master’s in Health Administration, Post Graduate Diploma in Emergency Medicine and many other postgraduate courses.

Ayurveda is widely accepted in India as an alternative to western medicine. If you are interested in the traditional Indian system of medicine and are ready to deal with difficult languages like Sanskrit, then go for BAMS. Moreover, the course also puts less financial burden on you, since its fee is much lesser than that of MBBS.
